Schlock and the iPad

With the announcement of the iPad last week, there has been a fair bit of discussion around our developer friends about our apps, and whether or not we'll be making iPad specific versions of them. Howard has also received a few questions about the subject of the Schlock Mercenary app.

Yes, I will be making an iPad version of the Schlock Mercenary app. I have already started with some screen designs, though there has been no code writing yet.

I like the look and idea of the iPad. I often find myself at home wanting to check out a webpage, but don't want to use my iPhone (too small), or switch on my laptop (too much hassle). The iPad seems like the perfect in between in this regard.

And for everyone that says "but it doesn't have Flash", well, that's not an issue for me. Personally, I dislike Flash heavy sites, and if I can't view a site on my devices (which are all very popular worldwide), then chances are it's not a site I want to visit anyway. As a web developer, I have argued against using Flash for anything except a very few special cases (file uploaders and video), and will continue to do so.

Schlock 1.0.1 Available

We have released version 1.0.1 of the Schlock Mercenary app to the app store, and it is now available for download.

This version is a bug fix release, with a number of issues resolved. Most of the issues are related to subscriptions, but there are also a couple of general issues fixed too.

We're still working on the remaining bugs, and will hopefully have another release out before too long.

Schlock - Now on the iPhone

The official Schlock Mercenary reader app for the iPhone and iPod Touch is now available to download from the iTunes App Store.

Schlock has never been so easy to read. Browse through the entire archive on your phone*, with panel based viewing so you can see it as the artist intended.

Your monthly subscription will also give you higher resolution strips, and access to three days ahead of the strip available on the website.

This app is a collaboration between The Tayler Corporation and Plus 14 Ltd, and is hopefully only the first of many Schlock themed iPhone apps.

* Strips are stored on the server and downloaded to your device on request. They are cached on the device but not stored permanently.

Schlock App submitted to Apple

The first Schlock Mercenary iPhone App has just been uploaded to the iTunes App Store, and is now waiting to be reviewed.

A big thanks to all the beta testers, who provided a large amount of really great feedback, including numerous suggestions and bug reports. Most of the bugs have been fixed, and quite a few of the suggestions were implemented as well.

All going well, the app will hopefully be approved and available for sale by mid-December. Keep an eye out here and at the Schlock site and we'll provide details when the app is available.

Schlock Mercenary iPhone App

Plus 14 Ltd is happy to announce our second iPhone app - the official Schlock Mercenary Reader Application for iPhone and iPod Touch.

We have been working with The Tayler Corporation for the past few months to get the app together, along with functionality not available on the web.

The app will shortly go into a is currently in public beta, and from there will hopefully be submitted to the app store before Christmas. Keep an eye here, and on www.schlockmercenary.com for more information about the upcoming beta and release.

Site Update

So obviously we've got a new site design. Huge thanks to the designers at Cactuslab for their fantastic work.

On the work front, I know it looks like there hasn't been much going on for the past year, but there has. After Tripzee I started a couple of projects, but in my traditional style I never quite got around to finishing any of them.

One large reason for this would be the arrival of my first child.

However, I have been working on a new app for a couple of months now, with a company in the US, and this app is getting close to being finished. More information coming soon, so keep an eye out.

Welcome to the new Plus 14 Ltd website.

Plus 14 Ltd is a company in New Zealand that does website and software development. We have a number of sites completed and in progress. Check out the nav at the top to see some of them.

Additionally, we are starting to do some iPhone/iPod Touch applications, the first of which will hopefully be available in the iTunes Store in September.
